When people think about spiritual communication, they imagine it's going to be really obvious. We picture a loud, clear voice that tells us everything we want to know about the universe - why we’re here, where do we come from, is there an afterlife, and all that. Unfortunately, that is not how it typically goes. What I discovered, to my dismay, is that Spirit is excruciatingly subtle. Annoyingly so. So bad you want to scream into your pillow or punch a wall. Don’t do that. That would hurt, but seriously, it’s like just say it already!

Okay, maybe I’m being a little dramatic, but it can be very frustrating. Sometimes Spirit actually is very clear and direct and gives you the full context. Most of the time, however, you’ll get fragments, a picture, a random thought, a feeling, a recurring symbol, or a song lyric that suddenly feels very relevant. Spirit can be very creative and sometimes humorous in getting our attention.

It can be really confusing at first, hence the frustration, and you might be thinking to yourself, “Am I just imagining this”, “Can this really be real”, or “It can’t happen to me”. That’s totally normal. I can tell you that you’re not imagining it, it is very real, and it can happen to anyone. Anything is possible. As time goes on, you receive more and more confirmations, and you start to trust it more.

You’ll find that spiritual communication tends to happen in a few specific ways. Words, phrases, or full on sentences might pop into your head unexpectedly. They may show up in the middle of another thought or feel slightly out of place compared to what you were just thinking about. Other times, you might get an entire idea all at once, like it was just downloaded into your brain.

Music can appear this way as well. A song might suddenly pop into your head for no apparent reason, sometimes one you haven’t heard in years. When I was younger, I worked for a drug store, and I find it hilarious that some random 80s pop song that the store used to play, will randomly pop into my head many years after I’ve even heard it.

Later, you might notice that the lyrics relate directly to something you were just thinking about or experiencing. Like when I finished writing this article and Another One Bites the Dust by Queen popped into my head. I laughed, and thought, “Good one!”

Images and symbols are another common form of communication. Sometimes they appear as quick flashes that disappear almost immediately. Other times, they unfold more like a scene from a silent movie playing in your mind’s eye.

Communication can also show up through synchronicities, meaningful coincidences that seem too well-timed to ignore. Maybe you notice yourself saying a word at almost the exact same moment someone on television says it, and this keeps happening throughout the day. You might start noticing the same numbers popping up everywhere, on clocks, license plates, or receipts. Sometimes patterns show up in nature, like an animal appearing multiple times in situations where you normally wouldn’t expect it. Spirit likes to use birds a lot which are considered messengers of the spirit world. I’m still wondering if the flock of crows that nearly took me out flying right over my car one day was Spirit saying, “Pay attention!”

Communication can also appear through physical sensations. Some people feel warmth, tingling, chills, or a soft pressure. If you sit quietly, place your hand over your heart, and ask your Spirit team to hold your hand, you may notice a pleasant warmth begin to build there after a few moments.

Not everyone experiences all these forms, which is perfectly fine. Some people notice one or two ways that communication tends to show up for them, especially when you’re first starting out. Don’t feel bad if it doesn’t happen right away. Other forms may develop later.

Because these experiences are often quiet and understated, they can be easy to miss at first. Sometimes you really have to catch them. At night especially, when I’m tired, I’ll hear something, but it takes me a minute to register it and not just let it pass by. Recognizing them usually comes with time and familiarity.

In a future article, I’ll write about how to recognize if what you’re sensing is from Spirit. There are other sources. Your pesky subconscious could be playing a role or even the collective consciousness. We’ll go into what those are and how to discern what’s what.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this article. Let me know in the comments what experiences you’ve had, how you interact with Spirit, and what your takeaway is from this information. And Spirit wants to remind everyone: you are loved more than you know, you are worthy of every kindness, and most of us, me especially, need to have a little more fun.

The messages may be annoyingly subtle, but Spirit never stops trying to reach you, especially when you need it most.
